Ident 2

Ident 2

Now to start with my 2nd Ident, this one is the scene were the potato will become a pile of mashed potato on the floor.

The first idea was to have a giant masher come down and fall onto it but then i thought for a more funnier idea i decided to go with a giant foot coming down and squashing it instead.

Using the original scene from the first Ident I started to create the layout for the Ident to begin with the television, cans had to be removed from the scene and then the sofa had to be moved further back so the camera could be placed just infront and to the side of it so it had the full doorway showing. The next step was then to place the potato man in the doorway and make his legs be vertical instead of bent from the sitting scene. This was my first challenge of the scene, i had to remove the bone and skin modifier from the cylinder then make them straight and have more bones so it was easier to animate the potato walking. The next step was to begin making the structure of the leg that would stand on the potato, to do this i created a large cylinder, and 2 spheres. Then using the select and uniform scale tool i made the sphere into the shape of a foot. Then changed the colours of the spheres (the foot) and the colour of the cylinder (the leg). Then using the bones feature I created a bone structure for the leg so that it was easier to move and using an IK and HI solver it was easier to manipulate the bones to move like a real leg.
Now that the scene had all of the necessary components it was time to start animating the potato, using the set key option i selected each limb and began moving them into different positions to see how much it looked like walking, luckily the IK solver and the HI solvers used on the legs helped make the movement look more realistic.

In the Screen it shows the Left Leg has been selected to move forward with key frames shown below on the timeline to display each time a key movement has been set by myself were the leg has been moved to a different location, each leg has about 14 different keyframesThe screenshot shows the right leg has been selected and this also has many different key frames for movement which also has around 14 keyframes for it.
The animation process for the legs took a whole day as i tried to perfect the movement of the potato so it looked smooth and life like, then it was time to animate the arms so that it looked like it was helping the potato to move forward then to move them in shock of seeing a large foot flying towards him. After the animation was completed for the potato i had to create animation for the large foot that would come down and crush the potato to do this i used the set frame system again to set a keyframe for each movement of the leg so that it was pinpoint accuracy to hit down on the potato at the right time.
The screenshot shows the starting point of the large leg with a HI solver attached to it with key frames set for the movement.
This screenshot shows the leg / foot ontop of the potato and on the timeline below the keyframes are set to move the foot down into and then out of the box using set key keyframes.
After all of the animation was completed for the large leg the next part was to create a squashed version of the potato so the best way to do this was to make a sphere make it into an editable polygonThen using the soft selection tool to mould the potato into a shape
The next step was to make it looked like he had been squashed. The soft selection tool allows you to select different areas of the sphere to move it easier and allow you to mould it into any shape you like resulted into a brilliant shape for the potato.
Using the material editor i selected the potato skin that i had created from before and place the skin onto the squashed sphere so that it looked like the potato had been squashed, to make it look more realistic i used a UVW Map to change the way the skin was placed onto the object.
After that the writing for the Dave logo had to be created so i started by typing out the text that i wanted to show and using the text tool i created the text label, then right clicking on the text i made it into an editable poly so that the writing was filled with colour so that the writing was clearer to read.
This is what the final image looked like of the squashed potato
The final step towards having a completed Ident was to add a light and add some camera effects using the timeline and the set key tool.

Lighting

To add light to the scene i used a high powered omni light so that the whole room was lit up light a light would in the centre of the ceiling, as there is no ceiling in the scene the omni light was placed just above the height of the wall.
As shown by this image.

Camera

The camera placement was crucial for this scene to work as the angle had to just show the side of the potato being squashed so the scene could be split into two parts one with a walking potato the second with a squashed potato. To create a good effect i moved the 2nd camera slightly so that it looks like the camera has shook from the impact of the foot hitting the ground and the potato.
The other part of the scene that was created was camera movement infront of the sofa and moving up above the squashed potato so that the viewer can see what is written on the squashed potato.
Shown by this screenshot.
Rendering

When rendering the scene i had to originally set the render size to the standard 640 x 480 but when i edited the video and watched it back the quality was very poor and the character looked fuzzy, so with advice from the other students and the lecturer i decided to go with the resolution 1280 by 720 and on playback the quality was leaps and bounds better than the original.
